Nicola – Tutor Interview Questions

  • What sparked your passion for English/Biology, leading you to tutor in these subjects?

In terms of Biology, I have spent a large part of my career working with animals.  I have an MSc in Wildlife Biology and Conservation; Level 3 in Education and Training and I am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA). I have worked as an NVQ Assessor and currently work as an undergraduate lecturer teaching animal behaviour, law and ethics, study skills, animal welfare among others with students studying a BSc Applied Animal Studies and BSc Zoology. I am also an external verifier for another college. I love that biology is an evolving area and that we can never know everything. As our understanding of life, the universe and all that we are continues to develop, there is more that we need to understand.

In terms of English, I have had a passion for language, words and literature since I was at school. I studied English as part of my first degree. I love exploring how words work and the relationship with how these words influence what we do and how we feel.

  • How has your background in English/Biology shaped your life or career path?

They have shaped my passions. My interest and background  in Biology has influenced my entire working life and was a significant driver in working in animal welfare and conservation. My interest in English is a lifelong interest. I love writing and talking about my work and experiences. I love exploring how the use of words influences and impacts us. This has been particularly important in my role as a lecturer.

  • For someone unsure about diving into English/Biology, what advice would you give?

I would  say – don’t over think either subject. Consider how both subjects are significant parts of our everyday lives and regard them less as subjects and more about the relevance to us.

  • What’s your preferred method for teaching complex English/Science concepts?

I like any teaching to incorporate a range of activities. I believe in sessions that are interactive and varied to promote engagement.

  • Is there a particular area within English/Science that you find most fascinating, and why?

That’s easy! For Science – it is all things related to wildlife and the environment. How everything works and how beautiful the complexity of life on this planet of ours is. For English – it is the use of words be it in everyday language or literature and how it influences how we feel.

  • Can you share an experience where understanding English/Biology profoundly impacted you or someone you know?

I have had the privilege of working with or meeting some incredible people whose work has been founded in Biological knowledge and have the ability to articulate their knowledge and understanding in an inspiring way.

  • What do you believe is the most rewarding aspect of tutoring in English/Biology?

It is rewarding to utilise my knowledge and experience to inspire young people. I love to see people develop their understanding and knowledge but most of all to see them develop a passion for things that I am passionate about.
